In 1063, a Benedictine abbey is founded in Ename by Adele of France, wife of Baudouin V, the count of Flanders, and daughter of the king of France. The Benedictine abbey starts in the former Ottonian palace building, directed by a monk from the Saint Vedastus abbey in Arras. A new abbey around the Saint Salvator church is built, re-using the masonry of the former keep.
