Saint Laurentius church and vicinity in Ename around 1780
To allow the monks of the abbey to participate in the mass, the Saint Laurentius church is re-oriented in 1750: the larger west choir becomes the main choir of the church while the smaller east choir becomes the entrance portal. In this way, the church is oriented towards the main square and centre of the village.

Saint Laurentius church and vicinity in Ename around 1780 |
Description
|
The village green has become a rectangular square with only two elements: a pillory and a cross (both are still standing today). The symbolism is very obvious and makes clear that the abbey is ruling the village. On the other hand, the Catholic Church starts a charm offensive in this period and integrates an altar for Our Lady in every church, also in Ename. |
