Evolution of the Saint Salvator abbey of Ename (1065-1730)
The Benedictine abbey of Ename is founded in 1063 in the former Ottonian palace building by the count of Flanders. The small and independent abbey, built around the Saint Salvator church of the former Ottonian trade settlement, evolves to a rich and important abbey, always loyal to the count of Flanders. When the abbey is abolished in the French Revolution in 1795, the buildings are taken down and sold as construction material.
