Saint Salvator abbey and vicinity in Ename around 1300
In the second half of the 13th century, the abbey is extended with a hospital and quarter for sick monks. Although being a small abbey with only 12 monks and an abbot, it is one of the richer abbeys in Flanders. One of the sources of income is timber and charcoal, harvested through a programme of forestry. The abbey has its own harbour for shipping the timber.
