GA110-039---- Perched at edge of the sheer sea-cliffs on SW side of Inis Mór. Dún Aonghasa, which is a Nat. Mon., is an extensive cliff-top fort, roughly D-shaped in plan (NW-SE c. 380m, NE-SW c. 210m overall), enclosed by two semicircular stone ramparts with possible remains of a 3rd and 4th. The 1st or inner rampart (NW-SE 41m, NE-SW 45.4m int.) is a massive but much-restored dry stone wall (Wth 6.1m, H 5m). There is a small mural passage at NNW and a fine lintelled gate (Wth 1.15m, H 1.5-2m) at NNE. Apart from a low, roughly rectangular platform (9.7m by 11.9m) of limestone pavement right on the cliff edge, the interior is featureless. The 2nd rampart (NW-SE c. 140m, NE-SW c. 70m), eccentric to the inner one and more irregular in plan, is comprised of a stout drystone wall (Wth 1.5m, H 1.7m) with an internal terrace, and a blocked-up gate (Wth c. 1.2m) at NE. A short distance outside it from NW to N is a c. 70m-long arc of drystone wall (Wth 1.95m, H 2.33m) of similar construction, evidently an unfinished 3rd rampart. Immediately beyond this and the 2nd rampart is a 30m-wide encircling band of chevaux-de-frise. Between 50-100m beyond the 2nd rampart stands a 4th, possibly also uncompleted; this is best preserved from NW to N (Wth 1.6m, H 1.7m) but appears to peter out completely at NNE.
