Ruthwell Cross - Detail right-side Runes 3D model
Detail 3D model of right-side Runes of the Ruthwell Cross, Ruthwell, UK - 0.25mm resolution - 3D model generated through Laser Triangulation 3D Scanning, triangulated surface mesh at maximum resolution (26 millions of triangles) - Geometry only.
3D digitization by Visual Computing Lab, ISTI-CNR - Collaboration between ISTI-CNR and the Visionary Cross Project. - Models created for the study of the runic text, didactic purposes, and the virtual presentation of the Cross to general public.
The Ruthwell Cross is a 17 foot high stone cross erected in the eighth century at a former military site (later probably a monastery) in Dumfriesshire. The cross was pulled down and broken in the seventeenth century and partially reconstructed in the nineteenth. It is now located in a small apse on the north side of the Ruthwell church. The cross is perhaps best known to Anglo-Saxonists for a runic inscription that may be the oldest known record of an Anglo-Saxon vernacular poem.
