Equestrian Statue of Mohamed (Mehmet/Muhammad) Ali Pasha
The statue of Mohamed Ali Pasha stands at the homonymous square, at the old city of Kavala. The Greeks of Egypt decided to fund its erection, in order to honor Mohamed Ali Pasha after his death in 1934. It was for the same reason that they built the plaza in which it is located. In order to form the plaza, several buildings of the surrounding area were demolished. The bronze statue presents Mohamed Ali on a horse, standing on a tall pedestal. The erection of the statue was assigned to the Greek sculptor Konstantinos Demetriadis. Konstantinos Th. Demetriadis (1881-1943) came from Stenimachos of Eastern Romylia and he was a sculptor, an academic, and an Olympic games champion. He studied in Athens, Munich and Paris, where he created his first workshop. His second workshop was in London. Today, the statue of Mohamed Ali Pasha is preserved in a good condition.
