Tarquinia was one of the most ancient cities of the Etruscan confederation. Archaeological evidence attests to the presence of villages on the plateau, which then gave origins to the Etruscan centre. Tarquinia lost power after its clashes with Rome between 311 and 308 B.C. The necropoleis are situated in the inhabited centres of Monterozzi and Calvario. There are around 6000 tombs - around 60 of which are decorated with paintings. The Tomb of the Augurs, the Giglioli, the Hunting and Fishing and the Leopards Tombs are some of the most famous.
The Bettini tomb has been dated to around the mid-V century B.C. and it was discovered in 1967. The tomb has a single chamber with a double sloping ceiling. On the back wall a scene depicting the banquet attendants is illustrated, while the sidewalls depict dancers and musicians.
