Tarquinia was one of the most ancient cities of the Etruscan confederation. Archaeological evidence attests to the presence of villages on the plateau, which then gave origins to the Etruscan centre. Tarquinia lost power after its clashes with Rome between 311 and 308 B.C. The necropoleis are situated in the inhabited centres of Monterozzi and Calvario. There are around 6000 tombs - around 60 of which are decorated with paintings. The Tomb of the Augurs, the Giglioli, the Hunting and Fishing and the Leopards Tombs are some of the most famous. The tomb of the Panthers has a similar course to many of the other painted sepulchres in Tarquinia, which over the course of the years have been excavated, lost and excavated again. A few months after its discovery the tomb was newly interred and in 1987, the Superintendency had to proceed with a new excavation to guarantee new access to the tomb, enabling them to verify the state of conservation of its paintings. This excavation operation has further allowed us to bring to light an interesting sector of the necropolis and its monumental tumulus. Traces of the original tumulus have also been identified for the Tomb of the Panthers. The area offers a cross-section of how the necropolis would have originally presented itself - as intertwining different types of sepulchres, not just of the tumulus kind, but also featuring the trench and ditch tombs for the incinerations and the chamber tombs for the inhumations.

Name Modelling and digitization process - Tomb of the Panthers
Description In-house developed algorithms and combined with commercial packages were used to generate a dense point cloud. The obtained dense point cloud was triangulated to derive a mesh model and finally a high resolution texture was generated.
Metadata Information
Name Metric survey - Tomb of the Panthers
Description Combined TOF scanning and panoramic photographic surveys were carried out to obtain the complete 3D model. The TOF range data were used to derive the geometry of the tomb, while the panoramic image was used to derive the photo-realistic high resolution texture.
